Significant strides have been made in the prevention, early detection and treatment of cancers. Several cancers can be successfully treated if detected early, while other cancers can even be prevented from developing due to advances in technologies and research. However, cancer continues to be the second leading cause of death in South Carolina.
The goal of the South Carolina Division of Cancer Prevention and Control (CPC) is to reduce the number of cancer cases and cancer deaths among our citizens in South Carolina. Staff collaborate with individuals, organizations and communities to encourage and facilitate cancer prevention, early detection and appropriate care for those diagnosed with cancer. The CPC works with the South Carolina Central Cancer Registry to partner on projects and obtain data to be used for planning, monitoring and evaluation of cancer prevention and detection activities throughout the state.
The South Carolina Division of Cancer Prevention and Control is made up of the following program areas:
- South Carolina Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program: The Best Chance Network (BCN)
- South Carolina Cancer Alliance (SCCA)
- Cancer Control and Advisory Committee (CCAC)
