Members of the South Carolina Association of Knifemakers will display a range of South Carolina-made knives and demonstrate various knifemaking techniques free to the public on Saturday, Dec. 1 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in front of the museum building.
Victor Odum, a 20-year knifemaker and an association official, is enthusiastic to share knowledge about his craft. “Knifemaking has been around for thousands of years and makers have and are creating styles that range from the simple utilitarian type to exquisite works of art,” said Odum.
“The Dec. 1 program is an outgrowth of the 2005 museum exhibit The Art and Craft of South Carolina Knifemaking,” added Curator of History Fritz Hamer. “I got to know many knife makers while working on the exhibit and found them to be highly skilled and dedicated craftsmen. It’s good to work with them again.”
In addition to the demonstration program, a selection of handmade knives can be seen on exhibit on the fourth floor History gallery near the Philips Simmons Gate.
