Columbia, S.C. – The South Carolina State Museum, an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, will offer free general admission on Sept. 27 to visitors who present a Smithsonian Museum Day admission card.
The admission card is good for two people and may be found in the September 2008 issue of Smithsonian magazine or can be downloaded electronically online at http://microsite.smithsonianmag.com/museumday/admission.html
Museum Day is an annual event during which museums and cultural institutions nationwide open their doors free of charge to Smithsonian magazine readers. Celebrating culture, learning and knowledge, Museum Day reflects the spirit of the Smithsonian and the South Carolina State Museum.
“As an attraction that has often been referred to as the ‘Smithsonian of the South,’ we’re pleased to offer this free day to Smithsonian members and others to come explore the culture, heritage and uniqueness of the Palmetto State that is available every day at the State Museum,” said Tut Underwood, the museum’s public information director.
State Museum members can join the Smithsonian for only $12. As an extra bonus, State Museum members joining the Smithsonian on Sept. 27 will receive a Smithsonian tote bag.
The general admission does not include the museum’s blockbuster exhibits Hollywood Comes to South Carolina or Leonardo da Vinci: Machines in Motion, which carry an extra charge.
