The South Carolina State Museum and the state and federally-funded programs of Experience Works, Inc. recently formed a partnership to the benefit of both organizations and, most importantly, to the senior citizens hired to work at the museum.
“May is National Older Americans Month and this is the perfect time to focus on training and hiring a highly motivated work force that can do good work for the museum and other businesses around the state,” said Janice Farnsworth, employment and training assistant at the Lexington County Experience Works office. Experience Works, with offices in 31 states and Puerto Rico, provides training and part-time job opportunities to low income seniors.
State Museum Human Resources Manager Brian Wilcox learned of the program within a month of starting work at the museum. “The museum needs good help, but like many agencies, funding positions is always a challenge. We jumped at the chance to partner with Experience Works. So far we’ve hired three people that help out in Education and Human Resources. It’s a great program,” said Wilcox.
Doreen Harvey of Lexington recently was hired through Experience Works and assists teachers and students coming for programs. “I love being at the museum! I really enjoy talking with the students and helping the teachers,” said Harvey. “I do everything from bringing in groups to helping organize lunch and, of course, sharing smiles with all the students and teachers. I have the best job!”
On a more serious note, Harvey also appreciates the added income she earns. “This job has really helped with my financial security and that’s a great relief,” she added.
