Gather up the family and friends and head to the South Carolina State Museum in Columbia this October for 31 days of fantastic fall activities.
First, don’t miss the last weeks of the “out-of-this world” blockbuster exhibit, Aliens: Worlds of Possibilities before it blasts off from Earth. The last chance to take in this hands-on, alien-filled exhibit is Oct. 14.
The annual Fall Heritage Festival and Pickin’ Party on Oct. 13 provides good times with great food, music and folk art all in one day. Enjoy bluegrass, “new grass” and folk music performances while indulging in four styles of South Carolina barbecue. Along with traditional handicrafts for sale, special children’s hands-on activities will be available in the Stringer Discovery Center.
“Since we're serving four types of barbecue during the festival, children can make their own pig magnets and try their hands at making origami pigs,” said Meika Samuels, director of education. “We’ll also have festival-related word searches and coloring sheets. Children always enjoy the many changing activities found in the Stringer Discovery Center and for the festival we’ve added a few more to make it an even more special day.”
Get ready for Halloween with two Saturdays of Tricks & Treats at the State Museum. Wear a costume and receive $1 off regular admission on Oct. 20 and 27. An event especially for kids, this annual family event will feature a Haunted Halloween party with games, crafts, balloon art, and scary surprises in the “haunted” galleries, storytelling and so much more.
Finish a month of activity with a night of frightful fun at the State Museum Oct. 26 – it’s the “Spooky Sleepover!" Spend the night with the museum’s ghosts, ghouls and goblins. "Eerie" entertainment, "fiendish" food and more can be enjoyed in this event for the entire family! For information, costs and to register, call (803) 898-4989 or email campin@museum.state.sc.us. Space is limited.
