Poultry Night 2007 – The Finale
SUMTER, SC – What initially began as an idea for Farm-City Week turned into a 20-year run of a very successful event for the Sumter community. But, as time goes by, things change, and Poultry Night will come to a conclusion with this year’s event on Thursday, November 8, 2007 at 6:30 p.m. at the Sumter County Exhibition Center.
Delicious poultry dishes, recipes, fellowship, crafts, exhibits, and thanksgiving for our many blessings - that’s what Poultry Night is all about! Sponsored by Sumter’s Chamber of Commerce, the agribusiness community and Clemson Extension Service, Poultry Night is a big educational and social event for more than 800 participants. Poultry Night also provides an opportunity to recognize the importance of the poultry industry to the multi-county area.
The poultry industry in Sumter County is as diversified as in any area of the United States. Broilers, turkeys, squab, and quail contribute millions of dollars per year to the local economy and more than 3000 jobs for the county. Poultry production accounts for nearly 70 percent of all agricultural cash receipts for Sumter farmers. The county ranks fourth among the 46 counties in turkey production and fifth in broiler production.
Poultry is also an important part of the agricultural economy of Sumter’s neighboring counties. Kershaw County ranks second in the state in egg production and first in turkey production. Lee County ranks fifth in turkey production. Broiler production is also an important part of the economies of Clarendon and Lee counties.
Poultry Night participants will enjoy quail, squab, turkey, chicken and poussin prepared in many different ways. This is a great way to entertain business associates and friends.
Tickets are available for $18 each from the Sumter Chamber of Commerce and from Clemson Extension Service in Sumter for this final event.
