Twins among 73 South Carolina seniors who rate ‘perfect’ after 12 years of school
What are the odds of a student never missing a day of school? From first grade through high school graduation, that’s 12 years – 2,160 consecutive days – of classes.
Now imagine the odds of twins never missing a day of school. And now imagine the odds of two different pairs of twins achieving 12 years of perfect attendance in consecutive years.
Last year, twins Tamara and Spencer Younce from Aiken County graduated with perfect attendance. This year, it’s Talmadge and Tyrone Dover from Gaffney High School in Cherokee County. In addition to achieving perfect attendance in the classroom, both Dover boys also played on Gaffney High’s state championship football team.
The Dover twins are among the 73 South Carolina high school seniors in this year’s graduating class who have gone to school through their entire academic careers without missing a single day. The 73 are among more than 33,000 seniors in South Carolina who will be honored at commencement ceremonies that begin in the next few days across the state.
“That’s truly amazing – 2,160 days and never missing a single one,” said State Superintendent of Education Inez Tenenbaum. “There must have been a lot of days when these students could have stayed home for one reason or another, but they stayed focused and they stayed on track. Not only should they be congratulated, but their families and teachers and school administrators should be congratulated, too.”
Since 1979, seniors with 12 years of perfect school attendance have been recognized by the Education Department.
This year’s 73 “perfect” students are from districts across the state, and from high schools large and small. Greenville, the state’s largest district, again had the most students graduating with perfect attendance with 15; Greenville’s Mauldin High had the most from a single school with six. Gaffney High in Cherokee County, Dorman High in Spartanburg District 6 and Sumter High in Sumter District 17 had five each.
