Columbia, SC - Ahlstrom, a Finland-based company specializing in fiber-based materials, today announced plans to start manufacturing operations in Bishopville, investing $16 million and creating 100 jobs. The company will utilize an existing 116,260 square-foot facility at the I-20 Industrial Center in Bishopville, and begin production in early 2007.
Ahlstrom is a global leader in the development, manufacture and marketing of high performance fiber-based materials used in a large variety of everyday products, such as filters, wipes, flooring, labels, and tapes. The fast growing specialty glass reinforcement markets, particularly in wind energy, marine and transportation industries, and the attractiveness of South Carolina’s business environment have created a great opportunity for Ahlstrom to grow in our state.
“Ahlstrom continues to expand operations in North America due to the growth potential in specialty reinforcements and filtration, and we believe that the state of South Carolina offers us a competitive platform in an ideal location”, says Jukka Moisio, President and CEO of Ahlstrom Corporation.
“This is another positive sign that our efforts to improve the state’s soil conditions for business are paying dividends,” said Gov. Mark Sanford. “With over 125,000 more people working than there were at the beginning of 2003, this administration remains committed to recruiting sustainable companies that will not only create new jobs but also help raise income levels for our citizens.”
“The excitement in Bishopville over its recent revitalization efforts as part of the Opportunity Grant program have resulted in the desired effect – being more attractive in securing new business opportunities,” said Secretary of Commerce Joe Taylor. “Commerce is committed to working with our rural communities to recruit more jobs, and Mayor Alexander and the Lee County Council are leading this community in the right direction to be successful. Ahlstrom is another world class company that will enjoy the many benefits of growing its business in South Carolina.”
“We are delighted that Ahlstrom has chosen Bishopville for its newest manufacturing facility,” said Charles Arthur Beasley, Chair of Lee County Council. “We have hard-working people that can help them succeed.”
“We’re doing the things we need to succeed in attracting jobs and investment to our community,” said Gordon Eckley, Vice-Chairman of Lee County Council. “We welcome Ahlstrom as our newest partner in this effort.”
“Improving the quality of life for our citizens is one of our most important goals,” said John Bell, Chairman of Lee County Economic Development Alliance. “The location of this plant in Lee County is a step in that direction.”
“What a great day for the citizens of Lee County and Central South Carolina. Ahlstrom Corporation is a global company engaged in advanced manufacturing and has a rich history of innovation and technological advances,” said George J. Bullwinkel, Jr. Chairman Central SC Alliance. “They join a growing number of companies from Finland that have discovered Central South Carolina to be a great place for international investment.”
