Columbia, SC - This month, South Carolina will welcome Death Sentence, a Twentieth Century Fox crime drama starring Kevin Bacon. The production will be filmed throughout the state, including selected areas in the Midlands. It is one of two projects that Hyde Park Entertainment is filming in South Carolina this month.
“We chose South Carolina for our projects because of the welcoming attitude of the Film Commission,” said Hyde Park Chairman, Ashok Amritraj, who is producing the picture, along with Howard and Karen Baldwin.
Andrew Sugerman, who is executive producer, said “South Carolina provides an excellent diversity of locations as well as an experienced crew base, which allows us to comfortably shoot two pictures simultaneously.” Also on board as executive producers are Nick Hamson and Lars Sylvest.
“In the increasingly competitive and knowledge-based global economy, we believe attracting more productions like this to our state will be an incredibly significant part of our efforts to grow our economy,” Governor Sanford said. “Doing so will bring a host of benefits to South Carolina; from the multiplier effect those films create for local businesses to the way it promotes our state from a tourism standpoint.”
Based on the 1975 novel also titled Death Sentence, the story follows John Hume (Bacon), a father who, angry with the judicial system, sets out for personal revenge against the punk gang that murdered his teenage son.
Directed by James Wan and produced by Hyde Park Entertainment and Baldwin Entertainment Group, Death Sentence will begin pre-production late July in Columbia.
Death Sentence is one of several feature films setting up in South Carolina this year. The South Carolina Film Commission has been aggressively recruiting productions to the state, bringing projects to the Midlands, and spread across the state from Charleston to Rock Hill.
“The decision by Hyde Parke Entertainment to locate their production in South Carolina shows how attractive our state is for film projects,” said Secretary of Commerce Joe Taylor. "Given the low cost of production in South Carolina, combined with our diverse array of scenic locations, our state really does offer the best of all possible worlds.”
