Press Release:

The expected generational shift in the state government workforce is in full swing which means South Carolina state government is actively recruiting a new workforce. State agencies are about halfway through a ten-year period that will see one of every four state employees eligible to retire.

That is why the Budget and Control Board’s Office of Human Resources is hosting the fourth State Government Career Fair from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, March 28 at the State Museum, 301 Gervais Street, Columbia. More than 30 agencies will be on hand to discuss current job openings and future career opportunities. The last State Government Career Fair in the fall of 2005 drew more than 4,000 participants.

“The generational shift in the state workforce that we have forecast for some time is coming to fruition,” said Sam Wilkins, Director of the Office of Human Resources. “That means state agencies will have to work hard and plan ahead to make sure they nurture a new crop of talented employees.”

If current trends hold up, about 10,000 workers will leave state employment in the next five years. As of today, there are nearly 500 jobs listed on the OHR website at http://www.state.sc.us/jobs/agency.html plus many more on separate job sites maintained by several state institutions such as colleges and universities. Those jobs can be found at  http://www.ohr.sc.gov/OHR/applicant/OHR-jobs.phtm

A Seminar on "Resume' Writing, Interviewing Skills, and Other Job Search Techniques" will be offered at 12:15 p.m. in the State Museum Auditorium.

Fair participants will also learn about the many advantages of working for state government. Representatives will be available to explain state benefits which include comprehensive health insurance, retirement and leave plans.
